You Know You're Addicted To The Olympics When...

Marty and I don't typically watch a whole lot of tv. We DVR some shows but other than that it's pretty limited. All bets are off during the Olympics, as I'm sure most of you out there are nodding your head in agreement. I realized today that I have been watching WAY too much tv - and I know I'm not alone. Here are some of the things that tipped me off:

  • You start saying the local NBC station's slogan out loud (ours is: "NBC 17, Accurate, Balanced, To the Point")
  • You openly complain about the commercials you hate the most (mine: Honda's Mr. Opportunity and McDonald's new chicken sandwich)
  • You tell your friends that no, you can't go out to dinner on Friday night because it might interfere with the Olympics coverage
  • You don't know why that horse is prancing around and it's rider looks like a mannequin, but you can't stop watching
  • You feel like you intimately know Michael Phelps
  • You file a protest about the Chinese gymnasts being too young
  • You get emotional when a long shot wins a medal
  • You get annoyed that the guide on tv says this: 10-6, Swimming, Gymnastics, Fencing, Volleyball, Soccer, Rowing, Equestrian, Diving, Trampoline - but it doesn't stop you from watching the entire 8 hours
  • You screamed out loud at the final of the Mens's 4x100 meter relay
  • You shake your head and frown at the slightest bobble on the balance beam (that'll cost her at least a tenth!)
  • You are more sleep deprived than normal

Those are a few I've realized, you guys have any others?

I'll play!

-You are suddenly an expert on judging in gymnastics, diving, etc.

-You have been sitting on your couch so much that you realize how uncomfortable it really is, but have no time to buy a new one because you can't tear yourself away from the Olympic coverage.

-You have considered taking one of your 6 days left for the year off work to catch up on all the Olympic coverage

-You close your eyes when you open up internet explorer to avoid seeing the Olympic results on USA Today, and blindly type in whatever internet site you are going to.

-You actually are starting to understand the new scoring system for gymnastics

-You put ths slow motion replay in slow motion to see how Michael Phelps really did win the 100m butterfly.

oh i am so jealous of you two... i have seen about 1 hr total of olympics :(

but i can prolly tell you all about dressage, which i am guessing is the equestrian event with the prancing and the mannequin... dressage is incredible, but harder for most people to appreciate than something like show jumping. i hope you enjoyed it though! and like i said, i am jealous!

Bri Gaal -

My name is Jason Clough, Content Manager for NBC-17.

I couldn't resist responding to this blog entry. After all, it appears our "Accurate, Balanced. To the Point" slogan is like one of those songs on the radio -- it's now stuck in your head.

I am actually intrigued by your post and I wonder...have you had a chance to catch our news at 7pm? Or if you've had a chance to check out our newest online website (www.mync.com)?

We'd love to know your HONEST feedback as we always enjoy hearing from viewers just like you.

You can email me at Jclough@wncn.com or if you feel inclined...check us out and than maybe consider a blog entry about your thoughts.

Either way, I'll be checking back in with ya! Thanks for listening to me...

WOW - so did you write the news, or what? Maybe they'll pay you to watch and report back during the 2012 games!!
I might just catch up on my sleep by the Winter Olympics.
How about a new law... A National Holiday each time an American wins 8 GOLD medals!

I am so embarrased to say that I have been too tired to watch much of the Olympics this go round. Maybe Matt will take me to London in '12.....yeah right! Yet Matt has made up for whatever I've missed:)

I have to say that somehow, shockingly, it sounds like you and Marty are watching even more Olympics on TV than Gary and I. And is that Jason guy for real? The best I ever got from a blog post is a couple of coupons for free peanut butter from The Peanut Butter & Company's marketing guy who found my whining about the airport Nazi's taking ours on the way to Yellowstone. Nice guy. Anyway, open water swimming is on the internet right now. It's not exactly a spectator sport.

- You can name the sport in which the commentator said. "BAM, and then lands like a butterfly with sore feet."

- You talk to the TV out loud, begging the cameraman to please cut away from Lolo Jones because watching her sob uncontrollably is breaking your heart.
